David Sandström Overdrive - Pigs loseDavid Sandström Overdrive
Pigs lose
Razzia Records

7

Quite possibly the only former Refused member still musically relevant, the David Sandström Overdrive have returned with their third album "Pigs lose", their first for indie-stalwart Razzia. Keeping true to his Elvis Costello-inspired garage rock, "Pigs lose" gives us some of David Sandström's best material, but at sixteen tracks in length, also a few that are not. The lamenting balladry of "Lisa, Lisa", the plodding "Happy home" and the sheer epicness of "Tearing through the decades" showcase and hone the songwriting perfectly, whilst "Songs that maybe won't be forgotten" is easily one of the best songs of the year. However, "Dead alive" and "The god thing" are downright hokey and disrupt the album's flow. However, fans will not be disappointed; although a little editing down to ten or eleven songs would have made this album one of the more memorable of the year just past.

MP3: David Sandström Overdrive - Songs that maybe won't be forgotten

Facing the prospect of another 12-hour workday at ye old dayjob, so let's make this quick and easy. I can't wholeheartedly recommend the new David Sandström Overdrive album "Pigs lose" because it's got a bit too much filler, but man oh man, the good songs are damn good. Maybe even some of his/their best! It's the culmination of a 10+ year career with the wisdom of hindsight and the optimal optimism necessary to combat jadedness. Learn from the past, look forward to the future; don't dwell, keep on moving, keep looking at the world with fresh eyes. Turn up the fucking cowbell and get going! It's easy to get bogged down by negativity in this day and age, but we can fight it. Even better if we've got a kick-ass soundtrack.

MP3: David Sandström Overdrive - Lisa, Lisa

Razzia Records was kind enough to pass along the brand new David Sandström Overdrive single "Lisa, Lisa" and naturally, I'm more than happy to share it with you. Like a lot of folks, I first became aware of David back when he was in Refused and have been following his career ever since, but of all the post-Refused bands, his solo work shines brightest. I have much respect for The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Text, Cobolt and so on, but they can't hold a candle to David's increasingly diverse catalog. From "Om det inte hånder..." aka The Grandfather Album to this, a slow dance number? Perhaps not so surprisingly when you consider that he now as AC4 as an outlet for his more aggressive side, though you gotta connect a lot of dots to span the difference. It doesn't really matter though 'cuz all it all depends on whether the song is good here and now and guess what? It is. I might be surprised somewhat by the content, but definitely not by the quality.
